Fatal Woman, by Patrick Quentin (Pan, 1960).

Reading old comic books and came across this mystery book club ad then wondered how representative the art depicted on the spines of the books were...and was surprised that Patrick Quentin’s Black Widow from 1952 was dead on and not just the idea of the advertiser’s artist. A search then revealed that all the depicted books were pretty faithfully recreated in the ad!

Robert A. Maguire is the definitive noir paperback illustrator and, while this cover is a bit unusual for him in being a single character portrait (Maguire usually painted entire scenes), it does feature one of his classic femmes fatales. "Patrick Quentin" was one of the pseudonyms used by writers Hugh Callingham Wheeler, Richard Wilson Webb, Martha Mott Kelley, and Mary Louise White Aswell when writing crime novels. Most of the Patrick Quentin novels are out of print in the English-language world, although they still retain some popularity in Europe.

Me iba de viaje en bici y quería tener algo para leer en las noches que ocupara y pesara poco. Encontré este libro en la biblioteca de intercambio de la estación de Utrecht Centraal. A diferencia de la mayoría de los libros que leo, este es malo. Pero, también a diferencia de la mayoría de los libros que leo, este me atrapó en seguida. Tienen talento los autores de novelas de detectives que son capaces de atraparme y de sorprenderme. El final es tan sorprendente que es prácticamente un shock. Buena novela para un período en el que uno necesita motivación para leer. Y lo que menos me imaginaba era que, al igual que “Q”, el autor de esta novela ¡es un pseudónimo!
