Pat Passlof
Pat Passlof (1928–2011) was an important and active figure in the development of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism like Elaine de Kooning, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler. She was born in Georgia and grew up in New York City. In the summer of 1948, she studied painting with Willem de Kooning at Black Mountain College.Â
Passlof’s early work was influenced by de Kooning and utilized the kinds of biomorphic forms explored by him and Gorky. However, Passlof was always very individualistic and her work was constantly varied in terms of touch, form, and palette. She was never content to repeat herself.
By the 1960s her palette was beginning to lighten. She used repeated patterns and marks across the canvas to create dynamic rhythms. She drew upon experiences and memories, as noted by titles referring to people and places. It is meaningful to consider that her work suggests a belief in the many ways and possibilities of how paint communicates. Her abstracted landscapes, like the later work of Claude Monet, although Passlof often worked in a vertical format. Passlof never believed in narrative in painting, even when her work became peopled by centaurs, nymphs, and horses. Â

PAT PASSLOF. “Pat Passlof: The Brush Is The Finger of the Brain,” a survey exhibition of the paintings of Pat Passlof (1928-2011), on view through April 12, 2020 at the Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation. Organized by independent curator and critic Karen Wilkin, the exhibition spans a period of six decades: beginning with the late 1940s, when the artist studied with Willem de Kooning at Black Mountain College, and continuing through her active participation in the Ninth Street creative scene, and to her years as a significant painter of the New York School. Passlof’s varied works defy easy categorization, with a palette that ranges from dark colors and earth tones to soft pastel, but all are connected through her ability to capture the spontaneity and sensuousness of paint through intuitive, physically vigorous, and eloquent brush marks. #patpasslof #aetfoundation #soloexhibition #survey #installationart #womenofabstractexpressionism #womenartists #5womenartists #berrycampbell (at The Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7xQ8-YlW1B/?igshid=ddh6fpeed3rn

We revisited the Pat Passlof exhibition at the Resnick-Passlof Foundation and came away convinced that Not only was she as good as her male peers but that she should occupy a position as one of the very best of the New York School artists. Her mastery is evident in every thoughtful stroke. How did so many of us miss her? #artoftheday #modernart @resnickpasslof #patpasslof #femaleartist #womenofabstractexpressionism #newyorkschool #abstractexpressionism #paintingoftheday https://www.instagram.com/p/B7hGNxKgR1A/?igshid=hmvlnq1869qs
