We have been having workshops with a lady called Angela who has been teaching us how to do weaving on a loom. I didn’t take any photos of this process as we were doing it but I found it very therapeutic to actually do in itself.

We have a loom of our own at uni but Angela brought in a selection of her own tabletop looms so we could each have one and do our own woven design. The huge amount of different coloured yarns that we have in the studio came into play majorly for this technical workshop as we all needed to use different colours. I tried to link my colour scheme to the next project which is based on maps so I did green with yellow and red as well mixed in with a neutral tone. I was very happy with the way I managed to fade each colour into the next one so I ended up with a very effective and aesthetically pleasing finished weave.

This was the most fun part of the whole process. I was just printing it as black but I could have also mixed up my own colour from the different inks that we had the option of using. We put a piece of cardboard inside the white tshirt so the ink wouldn’t run through and stain the other side too, then measured where to place the screen in relation to the shirt chest area which is where I wanted to print my design.

This is our first main project since embarking on the fashion pathway section of the course. We’ve just finished doing the museum project and now have this brief. I’m anticipating some interesting research for this as we have been encouraged to look more widely at the fashion context to focus on an issue of our choice that affects society. I am going to have a think about what to do mine on because there are some interesting things that I would be excited to have the time to look into. I’m initially thinking of something to do with the over-consumption of the world’s resources - perhaps water or land (avoiding crude oil as the most obvious one).
