(pt. 1) Hey Christine! At the end of each school year, my school chooses what musical we will be doing in the fall and we are given packets so we can prepare for specific roles. The show we were doing was Anything Goes; but for various reasons, a few weeks ago the teachers in charge decided we are now doing The Sound of Music. Iâve decided to go for Maria because what the worst that can happen? âOh no, I donât get to be Mariaâ Iâll still be in the show even if I donât get the part.
(pt. 2) I was wondering, what I could do to really bring it to the audition? I already use facial expressions when I sing the song I chose for the audition (My Favorite Things). I do that to show what I think the character would be feeling while they sing that song (this has done well in the past, so I thought why not). I just was wondering what more I could do. Thanks so much for all your help! :D
If youâre singing My Favorite Things, really try to focus on how each âthingâ is individual from the others. How is âthe dog bitesâ different from âthe bee stings?â  How is âgirls in white dressesâ different from âbright copper kettles?â  Why do those things in particular make you happy, and how do they differ in how they make you happy?  Particularize each thing, and make them unique in your head.  Visualize them, see them in your head as you perform!  You donât need to exaggerate this and âshowâ it to the director, just work internally and it will come across and more particularized and specific to the director!
Hey I just saw that post about someone doing songs from suessical and Shrek for an audition and you talked about making them particularized. What do you mean by that?
Great question!  It means really making each moment specific.  Letâs look at the lyrics to Donât Let Me Go: âI'll treat you right, and never get shoddy./If you kill a man, I'll hide the body! /So what do you say' You're not responding.../I think we're bonding!â  Particularizing is really finding the purpose behind each line, and genuinely delivering it.  Itâs not a general wash of, âIâm excited, I want to come with you, love me!â  Itâs, âIâm going to be your best friend, seriously, if you kill someone Iâll help you hide the body, wait, why arenât you saying something, I THINK WEâRE BEST FRIENDS NOW!â  Every moment has a different intention, each line is different and specific.  Itâs the difference between generalization and specification in acting, if that makes sense!
