βDeath Released Negro Convict,β Edmonton Capital. May 2, 1910. Page 01. ---- William Jones Died in the Penitentiary While Waiting a Parole From Ottawa. ---- Death released one of the convicts at the penitentiary last night when William Jones, a negro aged thirty-six, died from tubercular trouble after an illness of several months.
Jones was serving a two-year term for perjury. He had already put in half the time, as he was up from Regina about a year ago. A pathetic feature of this case was that the man might have been saved the ignominy of ending his life in prison, had he lived but a little while longer, as the fact that he was ill had been reported to Ottawa, and it is understood that his parole was already on the way here, and in all probability would have reached here in a few days.
An inquest will not be necessary, as Dr. Forin has been in attendance as he could live. The body has been turned over to Andrews Bros., undertakers, and will be buried in the Edmonton cemetery at the expense of the government.
