âDo you think the Syndicate would have my ass if I tried to sneak you onto the next island?â I asked, offering Henry a smirk.
âI think Lady Love Dies would probably just fucking shoot you,â he said, a worried look flashing across his face for a brief second before he went back to his regular smirk.
âYeah, but like what if?â
âParker, Iâm not like the Syndicate. You allâs fucked up rules mean I donât get to leave.â He looked at the ground.
I looked at him, feeling myself wince.
âI know. And Iâm really sorry that thereâs nothing I can do about it. You know I hate the rules, too.â
I reached up to take his hand, despite the cuffs wrapped around his wrists.
âYeah. Whatever. Itâs fine. There was never a place for me.â He looked down.
âIâm really sorry for this, too,â I said with a sigh.
âFor what?â He asked.
I shoved the cloth over his mouth. He tried to shout what probably wouldâve been profanities had I not kept the chloroform covered cloth tightly clamped over his mouth.
I kept it there until I noticed his head start to droop. I loosened my grip a little then, before taking my sword and slicing his handcuffs apart. I rubbed his wrists, feeling a little bad as I was sure they were sore from being in those cuffs for so long.
I gently kissed his forehead, then rubbed a hand through his hair, hoping heâd be okay when he came back to consciousness.
Then I gently tied him up, taking care not to hurt him or tie any of the knots too tight.
Iâd told Lady Love Dies to wait in the car for me, and when I walked over, she seemed to have drifted off to sleep. Perfect.
I pulled open the trunk and tossed Henry into it, then hopped into the car and woke her up.
âOh! Sorry, Parker. I guess itâs about time we get going.â
I just nodded at her, smiling about my plan. It wasnât foolproof, but it meant that I got to keep Henry alive, which was my top priority.
As we got through the gates with Henry undetected, I felt my smile grow even wider. There was always a place for him with me.
