The sound of Michael humming softly to himself echoed through the house before you even saw him.

He'd been in the studio all evening.

Not because he had to, not anymore. 

But because even at sixty-seven, music still made him happy.

The front door opened quietly.

You looked up from your book, wrapped up in a blanket, and smiled, happy to have him home after he had been gone basically all day. 

Michael immediately smiled too.

He kicked off his shoes by the door and walked over to you.

"Baby, you're still awake?"

"Barely, but I didn't wanna go to bed without you.”

He laughed and dropped down beside you on the couch, wrapping his arms around you. 

You ran your fingers through his hair, hoping to ease the tension in his body.

"Long day?"

"Mhm."

"Bad?"

He lay his head on your shoulder.

"Not anymore."

After a cup of tea, you got up to prepare dinner.

Only for Michael to start following you around the kitchen like a lost puppy.

"Baby, I can't cook with you attached to me."

"You'll be fine."

He placed his chin on your shoulder.

"I missed you."

"You were gone for four hours."

"Exactly."

Later that night, the two of you were lying under the blankets together.

Neither of you was paying any attention to the television anymore.

You played with his hair while Michael talked.

Horror Movies that recently came out that he wanted to watch.

Songs he was working on.

Animals he used to have. 

"You know, I should have gotten more animals when I was younger."

You laughed.

"Really?"

"Oh, absolutely."

"I would've had way more giraffes."

"More giraffes than the four you already had?"

"And maybe an elephant."

"Michael…"

"What?"

"Where?"

"We would've figured it out."

"And I wanted flamingos."

"Flamingos?"

"They're beautiful."

You laughed.

"You are such a nerd."

"I know."

Eventually, he slumped forward.

And before he could finish his sentence, he'd fallen asleep.

The next morning, Michael woke up wrapped around you.

His face in your neck.

"Morning, Sunshine."

"Morning."

"Don't move."

"I wasn't going to."

"I love you."

You smiled.

"I love you too."

"Good."

After breakfast was finished, you smiled at him.

"I have a surprise."

Michael raised an eyebrow.

"A surprise?"

"Mhm."

"What kind?"

"You'll see."

The kids had already come over.

Prince.

Paris.

Bigi.

Grandkids running everywhere, making a mess of the house already

Well mostly prince’s son (and history repeats itself)

Michael smiled.

"Is this my surprise?"

"No."

You took his hand.

"Come on."

When he stepped outside, he literally froze.

Right in front of him stood an enormous glass dome.

Inside of it…

Slides.

A mini pool.

A mini waterfall.

A lazy river.

A whole mini waterpark.

While still protected from the sun.

All Michael could do was blink.

"Baby…"

"Now the grandbabies can play with you all day."

"I know how much you miss Neverland."

Tears filled his eyes.

"And I know your skin gets sensitive."

"So I thought…"

"You deserve to make memories too."

He looked at you with tears in his eyes.

"Oh, Sunshine, I love you…"

Then he hugged you so tightly you both almost fell over.

Within an hour, he'd invited everybody.

Janet.

Jackie.

Marlon.

Randy.

Jermaine.

Everybody.

Even Mama Katherine.

And by afternoon the entire family had taken over the property.

Music.

Barbecue.

Kids screaming.

Kids splashing around in the pool.

Jermajesty nearly falling into the pool again.

Jermaine arguing over losing dominoes even though he was cheating.

Michael laughed harder than he'd laughed in years.

Eventually the sun began to set.

Michael fell asleep in a chair.

One grandbaby asleep on his chest.

Another curled up beside him.

A smile still somehow on his face.

You covered them all with a blanket.

Janet stepped beside you.

The two of you stood there watching him.

Janet smiled.

"You know…"

"I don't think I've ever seen him this happy."

You smiled.

"He deserves it."

Janet nodded.

"He really does."

Then she looked at you.

"And thank you."

"For what?"

"For loving him."

You laughed.

"Jan."

"Hm?"

"He's easy to love."

Tears filled Janet's eyes.

"I'm serious."

"He takes care of everybody."

"It's nice seeing somebody take care of him."

The two of you looked over at Michael.

Snoring.

Grandkids everywhere.

This was his peace.

Janet laughed through tears.

"That's my brother."

You smiled.

"And that's my husband."

And somehow after everything he’s been through. 

He’s still like sunshine.

it was Prince’s 4th birthday today. you and Michael made sure to get up early and wake Paris up so she can be there to say happy birthday with them.

Michael sent one of his assistants to grab cake and cookies while he made a handmade card for him.

you on the other hand, you helped out by setting out the plates and making breakfast. you had made all his favorites.

pancakes, grits, sausage, bacon, and orange juice. hash brown’s too. you made sure to season it GOOD.

Michael went to reach for the orange juice but you slapped his hand away.

“Ouch! Why’d you do that?” he whined.

“Cuz you’re not supposed to get any. It’s for Prince!” you tell him.

“But I love orange juice.”

“It’s not for you, Mikey.”

“I’m the one who put him in you, so technically it’s also MINE.” he said and he poured a cup of orange juice for himself and drank some.

you rolled your eyes. “What the hell am I gonna do with you? Ima go grab Paris.” you said running upstairs to her room.

you go to her room and turn off her white noise machine and try to wake her up.

“Paris, baby, time to wake up.” you shake her a little. she turned away making a noise of disagreement.

“Come onnnn, don’t you wanna say happy birthday to your brother and eat some pancakes?” you squeeze her chubby tummy. “C’monnnnn”

Paris sat up quickly when she heard pancakes. “I want pancakes, mommy.” she said jumping into your arms.

you took her downstairs and when Michael saw her, he smiled immediately. “Hi my princess, you sleep good?” he greeted her.

“Daddy I had dreams” she told him. “Well, I’d love to hear them but right now we gotta get ready to greet your brother for his birthday, and then we can have pancakes!” he replied, tickling her.

you went to go get Prince, he woke up quickly with no problem since it was his birthday. you led him downstairs and into the kitchen.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!” everyone said in unison.

“Oh my gosh, we’re having pancakes??” Prince said shockingly trying to reach for the pancakes.

you and Michael sat both kids down at the table. you gave them almost the same amount, Prince got more since it’s his birthday obviously.

later afternoon, Michael had gotten the whole Disneyland park closed down so only you guys were there so it wouldn’t be such a big mess.

“I wanna get on Dumbo!” Paris said.

“Well if your brother chooses dumbo then we can get on it, okay?” Michael told her.

“But why not now? I wanna ride the elephant!!” Paris whined.

“Because it’s your brothers day. When it’s your day then you get to pick what you wanna do.” He said.

“But daddy, i wanna ride dumbo ask Princeeee” Paris started getting upset.

Michael was getting a little frustrated and looked at you for some help.

“C’mere Paris” you said. her little feet came running to you and hold onto your shirt (her favorite). “Dumbo, mommy” she said.

“No, Paris, when it’s your birthday, then you can choose, okay?” you tried. Paris wasn’t having it.

“Prince, d-do you wanna get on Dumbo?” Paris asked, if Prince said no she would flip shit.

“No, I wanna go on the Peter Pan ride!” Prince told her, not exactly paying attention to her.

Paris flipped shit.

She started screaming and crying in your arms, she didn’t want to get on that ride she wanted to ride Dumbo.

At that point, Michael took her and went to go elsewhere to calm her down. Prince looked as they left.

“Mommy I’m sorry, we can go on Dumbo.” he said sadly like he did something.

“No, baby, it’s your day. Paris just wants to do what she wants to do. But if you wanna go on dumbo, we can get it out the way and then we’ll do what you want, orrrr we can do what you want first and then do dumbo last.” you told him, hugging him.

“Hmm.. I wanna make Paris happy! Let’s go to dumbo.” you smiled at Prince’s response. You knew that you and Michael raised him right and you were happy in that moment.

as if on cue, Michael and Paris came back. Paris was calmer and Michael looked stressed. “Took her a little bit but she calmed down.” he told you.

“Paris we can go on dumbo first!” Prince said, hugging Paris.

Paris hugged him back, now she was happy and they can continue their day.

at the end of the day they were back at home, everyone was in the kitchen, Michael lit the candles on the cake and Prince stood in the chair in front of the cake.

Paris was in your lap and Michael was now in position.

then he blew out his candles. “I’m 4 now!” he yells.
