So Happy Together
So you already know about how our Memorial Day went, but if you haven’t read this post, we basically sat around in the heat all day and then red-necked it together by squeezing a bunch of adults into a “family sized” wading pool with the kids while the men intermittently grilled a bunch of meat and we drank Miller’s High Life. On top of it being an extremely hot weekend, the a/c in the house is either on the fritz or it just hasn’t caught up yet to the sudden spike in temperatures. It made for kind of an uncomfortable weekend. It was warm enough to make me feel short-tempered and give Keith a migraine. Despite our feeling badly, we decided to take advantage of Indy going down at 8:15 (I’m assuming from a combo of the heat and sun and wading and no nap) we asked my brother to keep an ear out for Indy and Keith and I went out.
I decided that if we were gonna go out on a whim, I wanted to do it right. I put on my new mini-skirt, some make up and perfume and Va-Va-Voomed my way down the stairs where Keith was sitting on the sofa in the dark with his head in his hands. I felt like the night could have ended here, if he was feeling this badly, I didn’t want to force him to come out with me if he didn’t want to. But of course, being the trooper and amazing husband that he is, he hopped up and we walked out to the car. As we sat in the bar area of Gordon Beirch, we looked at each other, exhausted…Keith’s brow still a little sweaty. It had been one of those weekends where the sun’s heat sticks to you and you can all but see the air around you distort in a haze. We both ordered ice waters. We sat and talked and I eventually ordered an appetizer and then later a desert. As I ate, Keith sipped his water and talked about our future and how things have finally started going our way. We talked about our dreams and the dreams we have for our family, all the while Keith sweating and all the while me begging him to leave. “Babe, we’re out…let’s just enjoy each other and our time together.” And I really did. Even though we were in and out of there in an hour and the impromptu date ended with Keith handing me the keys to the house so he could go over to the neighbor’s yard and puke in their bushes, I had a really great time.
Today, Indy woke up with what I can only assume is a heat rash. We ran a bunch of errands (which we probably shouldn’t have done considering how hot it was outside today), ate lunch together, got the car inspected and ate Italian ice. We stopped by a pet shop so Indy could look at the animals, then went to a thrift store for some “new” books. Another great day, I love my little family.
I realized that we’ll never be in this place in our lives again. Indy will never be two and a half again, I may not look as good in a mini-skirt ever again…but prayerfully, we will always be this happy and will love each other this much and even more.
