Today is a nerve-wracking day.
For as today, you see, are the results of "parcoursup", the french online platform where you see into what schools* you got in for our higher education. (sort of like ucas)
The algorithm is quite peculiar, very well conceived on a software point of view, shit in everything else.
We can ask up to 30 different establishments, but 10 different courses (i.e. one course that they offer in 10 different places).
So, once you've applied to these schools (before April), you get your rank -yes your rank- and see if you've got a chance to get in.
Let's say you asked for a school that 2000 other people asked, on the the day of the release you see you are rank 400 BUT there are only 50 places for that specific establishment and course. You get nervous. How the hell are you getting in ? However, you see last year's stats and note that the last person to get in was number 600. It is farely sure you'll get in.
Say you are number 350 of 1500. You see that the last person to get in the previous year is 150. I'm sorry my man, that hope is almost dead.
You may wonder, how come somebody ranked 400 may get in a place where there are only 50 spots ? Well, the 50 first ranked in the best school are the 50 best ranked in the whole country. So those people will not go to a school slightly worse ranked, so those first-150-ranked persons in a good school can automatically be excluded because they will get in the best schools.
In conclusion, elitist systems *suck*, but it is 100% free or almost free (never more than 200 ⏠per year, unless you go into private, which is badly seen)
Anyways, today we get our ranks at 7pm, and i am scared shitless.

*it sounds weird to say school in english, it's more like universities or colleges. in french you would just say Ă©coles, schools in english, to englobe whatever type of establishment you asked (there are at least 4 different types)
