Katie stumbled through the back door, doing her best not to make a lot of noise but clearly did a bad job when she found herself greeted by her little sister. “Chicken Little!” She shouted, her tone overly jubilant. “Awww did I wake you? I’m soooo sorry,” she pouted, her words now slurring as she walked over to Maya and gave her a sloppy hug.
Maya waited in the kitchen for Katie to come home, knowing that it was already two hours past her curfew. When she heard the back door open, she turned the light on to reveal herself to Katie, her arms crossed and an unamused expression on her face. “Will you be quiet?” She replied in a harsh whisper. “I know mom’s a heavy sleeper but I’m not about to explain to her why her oldest daughter is coming home high again.” She guided Katie over towards the kitchen table and sat her down in one of the chairs before handing her a glass of water. “Drink it.”
“Don’t be a party pooper, May!” Katie said as she squinted her eyes and made a judgy face at Maya. “Woahhhh,” she giggled as she placed all of her body weight on her sister before she was practically thrown into the chair. Not bothering to argue, she glared at Maya before taking the cup into her hands and practically chugging the water.
~NEXT DAY~
Maya was sitting on her bed looking through a magazine when she heard a knock on her door. “Come in,” she said simply but when she looked up to see who it was, she sighed and kept her eyes on the magazine.
Katie walked in Maya’s bedroom and immediately sat on her bed. An apologetic look crossed her features as she tried to get Maya’s attention. “I know I keep making a mess of things and I’m sorry that you’re always the one who has to clean it up,” she began to say. “But I just don’t know what else to do.”
Maya didn’t look up from the paper, trying to ignore Katie but she managed to listen to everything that was being said. Staying silent for a little, she shook her head and looked up to meet her older sister’s gaze but her face was blank. “I’m done, Katie. I can’t do this anymore,” she replied. “You need help.”
Katie titled her head to the side and pleaded. “Come on, Maya. It’s not that serious,” she told the girl. “It’s just for fun, okay? I can stop anytime I want to.”
“Oh really?” Maya questioned. “You can’t even go a week without oxy, Katie!” She closed the magazine and tossed it aside as she grew more frustrated. “You’d think that after driving under the influence and killing someone that you’d stop but apparently that didn’t even do anything.” She shook her head. “Do you even realize how this effects my life? And Owen’s? We both covered for you. If this gets out, all of our lives will be ruined.”
Katie’s eyebrows pressed together and she tried to hold back the tears that started welling in her eyes. “I’m sorry, Maya. I’m so sorry.” That was all she could say. She was ashamed at the fact that she could put two people that she cares about through this but they were all already in too deep. “I’ll make you a deal,” she began to say. “I’ll quit doing Oxy and if I relapse, you can tell mom, okay? I don’t want to hurt you anymore.”
Maya listened to Katie’s words and she could tell that her older sister was genuinely apologetic but even then, it didn’t mean much considering all that has happened. “Okay,” she said simply. “But one relapse or if you do any drug, I’m going to mom.”
Katie managed to turn her lips into a small smile at Maya’s agreement. “Thank you.” She rose to her feet and walked out of the bedroom and down the hall to the bathroom. She took the little container of pills out of her pocket and dumped them into the toilet, watching as she flushed them. She sighed and couldn’t tell if she was relieved or nervous for what was about to come. She didn’t want this drug to control her life but what if by now it was already too late?
