“Some contracts are signed with ink, others with blood.” Explained a thin man with blonde curls. He was sitting own on a desk, with all sort of writing utensils ready. Ink. Quill. A knife. “You will only sign the ones with ink. As my Queen, I have given you the authority to make your signature legitimate. Only I will sign the ones with blood, as those require magic. Do you understand?”
Brenda nodded, feeling circlet on her head shake a bit along with her head movement. She adjusted it. It was a bit too large on her head. Upon seeing her struggle with that, Lilith chuckled and used his magic to shrink down the headpiece so that it would fit her just perfectly.
“Thank you! Now, I’m ready to start.” She said with a big smile. She could feel her cheeks hurting from how much she was grinning. Brenda sat down to look at her first piece of paperwork. “Let’s see...”
It was a formal progress report of someone’s work: 300 floors scrubbed, 10 sets of cutlery polished and 150 dishes washed. At the bottom, was the format ‘Allowance of 10 minutes of break time granted with signature only.’ with a blank space where the ‘Second Circle Ruler’ should sign.
“There are many souls here,” Lilith explained. “They perform tasks or punishments and, once their lot is fulfilled I-- now you: will have to sign to approve of the completion of their tasks so that the soul will be issued a new task or punishment to perform. Between tasks these souls are granted a 'break’ period’ where they are either rewarded for obeying or punished by other lesser demons. If the paperwork isn’t signed, the soul will remain in the task they were assigned indefinitely even if it was accomplished.”
“I... see.” Brenda said, looking at the person’s progress report. “Working person by person will take a long time, won’t it...?”
He shrugged. “We were thinking of adapting the paperwork so that we would work in ‘batches’ of souls at tasks. I think it will implemented very soon: maybe in just a hundred years.”
“Alright.” Brenda turned back to the paperwork after looking at him. She nodded slowly. “So, I just sign this and...”
After dipping the quill in the inkwell and signing the paper, the paper vanished. Lilith nodded, as if pleased to see how good things were going. She turned back to the pile of paperwork to sign. Was it her, or was the pile a bit... taller?
“Very good, now it’s been taken to where it’s needed. Just sign the documents and they will go where they are needed.”
Brenda nodded. She reached out to grab another paper, and realized that the pile had, indeed, grown. It was growing right before her eyes. It was just going taller and taller.
She wondered if she could get a stamp with her signature to make the process a bit less tedious on her wrist.
