Elefant heavy tank destroyer. 91 built, they weighed 65 tonnes and its 200mm frontal armour was impervious to any gun in the war. First seeing service as the Ferdinand (named after its designer Doktor Ferdinand Porsche) at the Battle of Kursk in July 1943, its 88mm L/71 gun could destroy Russian T-34s from 3,000 metres. It was modified with the addition of a bow machine gun for close-in defence and renamed as the Elefant in 1944. This excellent example was restored by and on display at US Army Ordnance Museum, Aberdeen, Maryland, USA
