There's one horrific aspect of the #covid_19 #Coronavirus pandemic that we are NOT talking about...the aftermath. In the wake of #panicshopping and restaurants turning to takeout/delivery only, we will see a large burst in single-use plastic and other waste. We are only thinking of the moment, but we cannot forsake the impact of the future. It is possible and easy to prepare and handle the moment while still making sustainable swaps. Examples include, but are not limited to, bringing your own bags or using cardboard boxes to carry goods out of the store. (Costco thankfully already does the latter). If you order takeout/delivery, decline straws, plastic utensils, and bags--use what utensils you have at home. Instead of single-use water bottles, refill larger jugs for 30 cents or whatever it is at the refill stations in front of most stores. Better yet, buy a water filter for in-home use! Both of those options will save you and your family money in the long run too. Running out of paper towels? Use washable kitchen rags with a cleaner of your choice. Wash the rags separately with laundry soap and a little vinegar to disinfect and you'll never have to buy paper towels again. I could go on giving swaps and suggestions, but its best to start with the easiest. I'm not perfect at this either, always learning. It's a commitment I've been working on for the past 3 years and even though I'm just doing the basics right now, I still have to work daily at it. Lastly, consider supporting causes like @4ocean as they have been cleaning up our oceans already and will no doubt have their work cut out for them in 2020 and beyond. Our planet is our inheritance, our stewardship. Today was interesting at the store. They removed the shopping carts and only offered the small hand baskets for people to shop with. The police where out front. The clerk said they had toiletpaper at 7am when they opened, then it's sold out by 8am. No fights or problems but some customers wore mask while shopping. I predict 2 more months of this crazyness before we start to see the numbers of people infected start to lower.
