Sewing a mock up of a panel hat. I had this old felted cotton moving blanket that I've kept around because, lets be real, I hoard fabric. Brought this with me specifically to practice making this hat just to get rid of it. I located this tutorial via google
The felt is to simulate 100% wool felt for the hat structure. I plan on three layers.
Sewed each panel together with a straight stitch. Flattened the seams with a second straight stitch in preparation for an outer cover. Since felt does not fray, there is no need to roll or fell the seam allowance - flat is flat.
The cover is the exact same pattern with an additional 3/4 inch on the bottom of each piece to allow me to roll it under the brim, as shown here. This herringbone twill cotton will simulate the wool suiting fabric I was able to thrift from some old suit jackets, plus it looks really nice IMO
Here the cover edge is rolled under, whip stitched all the way around, and adjusted so the herringbone pattern is straight over the felt. I did it by putting it on my head in front of a mirror after sewing, and adjusting/pulling/stretching as needed - the whole assembly was twisted slightly counter clockwise and looked wonky.
And here is a liner made from leftover linen using the exact same pattern as the cover. I put the liner on my head, then put the hat on to get it lined up in the right position. I'll sew this in with a hidden stitch
And here is the completed cap! I have successfully avoided working on my hose for the entirety of exam week
OMFG. This is one of the most comfy hats I have ever owned. I need to put some sort of trim on it but jfc this thing is great! I slept in this hat instead of my usual beanie.
