Hey I really really dig this podcast. The story is great, the world is an amazing blend of d&d goodness, derelict indie band culture and magitech and I love that. I have been thinking of recording some of my RPG groups sessions and I was wondering about both the editing process in general, and the music side of it in particular? Do you record songs just for the episode, or use tracks that you have already recorded?
hey pal! all the editing and postproduction (incl. music) is done by me (DM MJ) in about two waves:Â
we each record separately in audacity (free audio editing software). after each session i get everybody’s audio files and sync them to a designated point (typically we all clap together on the call so that there’s a visible audio spike for me to use). i use audacity to sync, as well as to filter out background noise and adjust volume levels so that everybody’s equally loud. that’s the editing wave.Â
postproduction is going to vary a lot for whoever’s doing it but here’s the way it happens for DNL. i export the mp3 of the raw session as an mp3 and open it up in garageband. i typically have incidental/background music already prepared (more on that in a minute) which i drop in and equalize with garageband’s interface - it’s a little easier to move stuff around in GB for me, but everybody’s got different preferences. this is where i cut out all our like, long pauses and rule checks and tangents about like, what the best panic at the disco song is. after i have everything in the right spots i give it a final listen to make sure the music is at the loudness i want, etc., then i bounce it to the disc as an mp3, which is what gets uploaded to libsyn (and syndicated via yknow apple podcasts and stitchr and whatever).Â
i make music in garageband using a combination of ready-made loops available in the GB library and my own instrumentals, which i make using a 2 octave midi controller keyboard. everything i make is done specifically for the podcast, typically after the session has been recorded (although for certain Set In Stone scenes i sometimes have music already drafted). if you have specific questions about scoring i’d encourage you to shoot me a message on my main (@piratejenne) and i’ll try to help you out.Â
i hope you dont mind me answering this publicly but this question comes through relatively regularly and i don’t check the inbox here very often now that we’re Extended Hiatus
