BIO
YOUTH :
Clemence‘s family has lived in New Jersey for generations and generations, where they’ve run their family business for decades. As the eldest of six children, Clemence was never just the first born son; he was expected to set the standard for the five siblings that came after him. The Gambettis own Gambetti Mercato, a well-received and frequent Italian delicatessen, specialty grocery, and wine import shop. Every member of the household has its role there: behind the counter, in the kitchen, or managing deliveries.
Clemence, from a young age on, knew it would be his future, his profession too one day. The moment he graduated high school, he was expected to contribute where he could, before slowly taking on larger responsibilities. Reliable, hardworking, and painfully obedient, he quickly became exactly the son his father wanted him to be. He rarely argued, rarely questioned orders, and shoved every disagreement aside to face his duty. But theres always only been so much he could swallow for the sake of peace within his family.
YOUNG ADULTHOOD :
Outside the mercato, Clemence struggled to understand and regulate his own emotions. Years and years, decades even, of swallowing frustration and his own mind, left him unable to express anything before it erupted into anger. In his early twenties, one late night at a club ended in a drunk fight and a brief few hours stay in jail before his father bailed him out. The arrest was embarrassing, humiliating even, but barely comparable to what awaited him at home. His father’s control tightened until it reached every corner of Clemence’s life. Privacy was more and more erased. Every attempt at independence— a hobby, friendships, plans of his own, was questioned, redirected, or taken away completely. Eventually, exhaustion beat persistence, and he convinced himself that this was what life looked like as a Gambetti.
Years passed until history repeated itself, that craving for a sense of freedom growing silently beneath … almost a decade passed until that itch became impossible to ignore.
As his father began preparing him to take over the family business, Clemence realized that by accepting the responsibility he’d surrender his life for good. There would be no more chances to break free unless he was willing to run the rest of his family in the grounds too. He loved them deeply. His bond with his mother had never weakened, and despite their different personalities, he remained close enough with his siblings. But loving them … didn’t mean he could bear living under his father’s thumb forever.
ADULTHOOD :
Yasemin came into his life a while after he turned 30. What started as a friendly conversation on a dating app quickly became the first relationship that felt entirely his own. Away from the eyes of his kin, and especially far away from his father. She lived in Palm View, far enough away that every visit felt like a chance at being someone else, living another life; a quieter one, where nobody watched his every move or decided for him what came next. They fell in love so quickly and so vehemently, and for the first time, Clemence found himself getting a glimpse at a future that belonged only to him.
She gave him the courage to finally confront his father, to finally speak his mind. He admitted he didn’t want the business, he didn’t want the responsibility. Most of all, he didn’t want every decision in his life filtered through someone else’s opinion. The argument, as expected, exploded … and in the heat of it, Clemence packed his things, left home, and moved to Palm View, to her. Hidden inside his luggage was an engagement ring. It may have been impulsive, but Yasemin never hesitated to say yes and Clem never doubted the step either.
PALM VIEW :
The months that followed were the happiest he’d known. He opened Grotta Ambrata, a boutique wine shop built from his own vision, with his own heart in it, with no one but himself deciding, planning … and working. Yasemin and he, they planned a wedding, built routines, and imagined a future that finally felt … peaceful. Just that … distance couldn’t silence his family.
His father called relentlessly. Messages that were masked as a friendly check in turned into guilt trips first, then into demands. Even his mother and siblings were dragged into it, each trying, knowingly or not, to convince him he was making the biggest mistake of his life on rash decisions that would lead him in the wrong direction. Carefully at first but more directly soon enough they reminded him that he barely knew the woman he intended to marry, that abandoning his family was selfish and that eventually he would regret choosing love over blood.
With every text message, every call, every word in his ear … the steadiness with which Clem made his decisions started to buckle. Once more … that old feeling of being caught between his own wishes and his family’s wishes returned. Terrified of what father might do if he ever turned that obsession toward Yasemin, Clemence made the cruelest decision of his life. Without giving the explanation she deserved, he ended their engagement days before the wedding, called it all off and … ran once more. Just that this time he ran from the one good thing he’d had achieved for himself. Overnight, the warmth between them disappeared. Clem never returned home after that, too humiliated by his own acts of weakness, too embarrassed to admit he’d obeyed to his fathers wishes yet again.
Instead, he buried himself in what little remained of the life he’d built in Palm View. Worked unreasonable hours at Grotta Ambrata, drank more often than he should, slept less than he needed, and convinced himself that exhaustion hurt less than grief. Somewhere along the way, the unregulated anger in him was replaced by … something else. Perhaps he would never fully return from the damage he’d done to himself, to her; to his family. Yearning for an outlet, for a way to release the emotions he still never learned to express, he turned towards the gym where heartbreak turned into hard work and where he could quiet his mind … for a while at least.
These days, Clemence is calmer than he once was. Quieter. More thoughtful. The fire that once raged and bursted now burns at low flame low beneath the surface. He still carries guilt for the things that were done and said and laid now irreversible in his past. A quiet life at Palm View might be the only way he wishes to continue for a while.
