Out of his shirt pocket came a small kerchief which Jake promptly hands to the woman. “It’s alright. Take all the time you need.” He’s concerned, of course, but he absolutely refused to force any information out of her. The door is open if she’d like to, but for now, he’ll just place a gentle hand on her shoulder in an attempt to comfort her.

He’d never explored this part of himself before, and it certainly wasn’t helping his crying, but it did make him feel a bit better. Perhaps he shouldn’t push her away. If she was willing to mother him, maybe he could accept someone aside from his grandma doing just that. Maybe that’s what Grandma English would have wanted. So, he silently went in for a hug which quickly became a cling, his face burying in her shoulder. And he began to sob. So hard, in fact, that he can’t speak. Not that it matters, seeing as he’s got nothing to say. Perhaps a single word: thanks. But that will come a bit later.
