Photos by @amivitale. The world is a diverse and magical place - plants and animals, great and small, majestic and sometimes downright bizarre. Today is International Day for Biological Diversity, a day to celebrate this wonderous planet and all the living things that work together to create the world we live in. In light of the @UnitedNations report on biodiversity and ecosystems predicting the potential extinction of 1 million species, today must also be a day to focus our efforts on making sure that this magical web of life remains intact for generations to come, so that giraffes, elephants, zebras, antelope and the stunning African painted dog do not exist only in photos of a world long since lost. The African painted dog is one of the world's most endangered mammals, the numbers of African savannah elephants have declined 30 percent in just seven years, giraffe are currently undergoing a silent extinction and populations of some zebra species (like these Grevy's zebras) are in the low thousands. All of these photos were taken in northern Kenya where each play an important role in the ecosystem. If one is lost, a hole is left, and the system loses its balance. Lose too many, and the system collapses. It's not too late to protect these creatures for generations to come. Get involved today. African wild dogs, also known as painted dogs, used to live all across Africa. Impacted by poaching, road kills, and mining and logging that destroy habitat, only 6,600 dogs are thought to remain. @painted_dog_conservation works closely with local people to develop an appreciation for the dogs and the value of conservation.
