The Binkie Years
It's crazy how much you forget already. Â I have a 9-year old and until I saw a kid contentedly sitting sucking on her pacifier today, I nearly forgot about THE BINKIE YEARS.
In our household the pacifier was called, "The Binkie." Â And after some minor debate about whether such a device fit into our household, we had one. Â We didn't use them to squash crying or shut the kid up, but little babies like to suck on things, thus the binkie. Â
And we knew that this was a temporary time, and that binkies would eventually leave. Â But when a binkie was needed, boy you better make sure there was a g-damned binkie available. Â We'd find them deep under the couch, coated in hair and dust bunnies and give em a good rinse. Â Good enough! Â Sometimes I would find one in my backpack unexpectedly and it was like finding a dollar bill in your jeans' pocket on laundry day. Â It put a spring in your step.
When we finally decided to wean her off the binkies, we decided not to buy any new binkies. Â And thus began the frantic searches for 1 of the 4 binkies. Â And then the frantic searches for one of the 2 binkies. Â And then the search for The One True Binkie.
Finally, we let the Binkie Fairy come and take The One True Binkie away in exchange for a bicycle. Â The Binkie Fairy, of course, trades in used binkies that she distributes to babies that need them. Â Pretty gross, Binkie Fairy.
