@p3hero I think the police and their actions play another important purpose that I’ve been thinking about a lot.

We find out early on that Hodaka has run away from home, that he felt suffocated there. The way this is conveyed seemed to me to imply that something more is going on at home, but we never find out about that. We must simply take Hodaka at his word and trust that he is better off in Tokyo.

The police say something to the effect of “what you’re doing is ruining your life/your future”, which is ironic when considering climate change, but most importantly they’re wrong. At the end of the film, Hodaka comes right back to Tokyo. We never have to find out why he feels so suffocated back home. We never have to find out that he’s being abused or something. We only have to listen to him. The police, as a part of the establishment world of adults, think they know what’s best for Hodaka, but the film implores us to take his concerns at face value, and to believe him.
