It should be illegal, this, Sean thinks, that you can be expected to pack up your life and move to the other side of the country at the drop of a hat, in time for the next game, now sporting a different jersey, and with time for little else.
“You will send me postcards, it won’t be so bad.”
Danton stops mid-whirl and gives him an incredulous look over his shoulder.
“Yeah, I hear Anaheim is real picturesque.”
He turns back to his drawers but stands very still, huffs, like he can’t remember what he is looking for.
“Socks,” Sean offers, “you need more socks.”
He is helping Danton pack a suitcase with enough clothes for a week or two. The rest is going to come after--there is no time to properly pack everything up. If he tries, Sean can almost convince himself it’s for a road trip--that this place won’t be empty in a couple of weeks time with no trace Danton ever lived here. He has been renting. Sean tried to convince him to buy his own place a couple of times but always got the same evasive reply back--in a couple of years time, or, right now the market is not right, as if he was a real estate specialist. It used to drive Sean mad that he never wanted to settle down.
“You will send me cards from the road, dumbass.”
He gets it now.
Danton laughs as he throws- six, seven, eight--balls of socks into the suitcase.
“Only if you write back.”
Sean wishes they had more time. He wishes he hadn’t been such a coward, waiting for the right moment, waiting for confirmation, a sign from heavens that never came.
And yet none of that matters right now. He offers his best smile, however hollow it feels stretching across his skin.
