             At a show in Cleveland on June 8th, Twenty One Pilots changed the lyrics to their breakout song “Stressed Out,” but there was nothing funny about it. The song itself is deeply personal, regarding the stressors of growing up, and its acceleration into the limelight proved to be more than the band expected. The song, like many that reach the mainstream, became severely overplayed. Consequently, vocalist Tyler Joseph changed the lyrics to reflect that. From describing his desire to write a unique song, the new lyrics focused on writing an unheard song:

“I wish I wrote a different song no one's ever heard. I wish my mom would just admit she's sick of every word. Overplayed, overstayed, it was a smash hit. Funny how overplayed songs sound like crap.”

             Many artists are subject to their songs being so overplayed that even their mothers aren’t fond of their child’s masterpiece anymore. Overplaying a song destroys its value. An individual that overplays a song on their MP3 is not the issue, but a radio station that plays the song every hour or so should not happen. A station has access to thousands of songs, so why is there a possibility of overplaying?

             The answer is simple. Our society is obsessed with the right here, right now. We don’t know self control. We want it all and we want it right now. Sometimes that’s okay, and sometimes it isn’t. Radio stations just want to indulge our “right here, right now” attitude. If a new song emerges that strikes listeners at the first chord, the stations will play it. And play it. And play it. Because that’s what the audience wants. There is a constant battle between respecting good artists’ work and playing what the people want to hear. Unfortunately, that’s the music business—or any business. There’s a give and take in the relationship where neither side can completely satisfy the other.
