Hey guys, my city is in an overdose crisis and it's important people know about it. A record number of over 600 people have died of overdose this year. Some of my best friends have been meth addicts and I can tell you that their lives are valuable, they are good people, they deserve help and compassion, and we should see every overdose as a huge loss to the community. These deaths are preventable and they don't deserve to suffer. Please don't stigmatize addicts by treating them as lesser, anyone can recover but not everyone can do it alone. December 17 2016 - [⚠️: drug addiction and overdose] by Charlie Smith In November 2014, the #BC government issued a news release announcing the pending retirement of provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall. Kendall, one of the public-health pioneers at #Kitsilano's Pine Free Clinic in the 1970s, was going to end his career on March 31, 2015 after 16 years on the job. In the statement, Health Minister Terry Lake thanked Kendall, then 71, for his years of service, including his oversight of the SARS crisis in 2003, the H1N1 flu scare of 2009, and efforts to prepare for the Ebola virus. But two years after that statement was issued, Kendall remains on the job as B.C. faces an unprecedented #overdosecrisis, which has taken more than 600 lives this year. That's because the province granted his request in January 2015 to rescind his retirement announcement. In September of this year, Kendall reassured the public by saying he was cautiously optimistic that the number of overdoses would go down as a result of various public-health initiatives. He was proven wrong over the past two months and particularly on Thursday (December 15) when 13 British Columbians died of overdoses on a single day. In the prime of his career, Kendall was a leader in #Canada in advancing #harmreduction methods. And for that, he deserves the thanks of many families whose loved ones are still alive as a result of his efforts. #druguse#drugabuse#drugaddiction#addiction
