I liked the episode. The 90 minute length is so much better - we actually got a bit to let the story breathe rather than just event hopping through it. I wish all the episodes could be this long.

The Christies are expertly cast - Tom especially is like he stepped right out of the book - hard nosed and envious of Jamie. Malva seems sweet - but that won't last. I'm looking forward to seeing her story progress. Claire hasn't slapped anyone in a long time - she's overdue.

(and yes I added this image because I will always love Laoghaire getting slapped - she richly deserved it) Fergus! I love me some Fergus and I'm so excited for his story - finally! Sad that he and Marsali are so fractured when they were so close last year.

Not sure how I feel about Claire's self-medicating - especially with ether. She knows how dangerous it is (or should) and lighting a taper in the surgery with the ether uncapped? Is Claire going to blow up her own house?? This is a stupid thing to do, and Claire Fraser is a lot of things but she’s not stupid. I could see her pounding back the whisky but not ether. Although Fergus is digging into the whisky so I guess you can't have two drunks in the family at the same time. Hopefully the two of them talk (which they don't often do) and lean on each other for support.

Jamie Fraser, Indian Agent. This ought to be interesting. Jamie was pretty clear what the British could do with their red coats last season and how they could get them there. But he's still walking between two fires so he plays along for now. Hopefully they keep the humor and friendship with him and the chief. It looks like he's going to have some conflict with Young Ian and I'm not sure how I feel about that because they are so tight in this story through the book.

Richard Brown was a creep in the book and the actor is crushing it. He's got the creep factor in spades and looks like a good villain - but is he? Or is he a red herring for the real villain?

ALRIGHT #SPOILERS IN THIS ASK. 

It’s hard to judge an entire season on 1 episode. The writers plan the whole season and have thousands of pages to fit into 13 hours of screen time. They can’t include everything and they can’t do everything that happens in the book the way it happens in the book. It’s an adaptation. They are going to put their own touch on the plot in the writer’s room: just like Sam puts his spin on Jamie and Cait does her spin on Claire. And to be honest, you are entitled to your opinion.... You may not like what they do, and that’s OK. Not everyone is going to be happy.... That’s pretty much a fact. 

That being said, I think that in the show Bonnet taking Jamie’s ring is a bit more significant. Knowing how the book goes and the story arc with Bree and the rings, in the medium of the show- Jamie’s ring is more distinct than Fronk’s. In the book Fronk’s ring has the engraving on the inside. To the best of my knowledge, the show didn’t include that- on either of the rings. So, when Bree sees Bonnet with that one special piece of silver she will know that it’s her mother’s.
