Good evening everyone!
Sarah, I was thinking in ending mine with a critique of the neoliberal economy and the effects it has on the lives of "fast food families".
If you'd like to have an idea of the flow of the argument, I start my part of the podcast investigating if fast food is facilitating the process of globalization, if fast food is only an expression of globalization, or if these are not as connected as we believe. To do this I talk about Singapore and the United States. Despite the spread of multinational corporations involving fast food all over the world, the neoliberal economy has not had the same effects everywhere in terms of what food people get, when, how and why they get it. Taking in consideration Cooper's reading, I question the standard perception of what globalization means and looks like. But did the spread of fast food and neoliberal economic ideals have any impacts at all in our way of living?
In the second part of my 5 minutes I talk about the effect of neoliberal economies on the average family. To do this I look into mothers and, as we talked in class, their perceived role in biological and cultural reproduction in society. Being women in the new economy forced to work for longer hours I investigate the effect of it in the practice of commensality and preparing food. To end the podcast I determine the effect of the spread of fast food on the society and individual, and how ingrained and politicised the problem is, using the video from Aljazeera.
