One year ago, 49 people lost their lives in one of the worse mass shootings in America. Waking up to this was the scariest thing I've experienced in America and in my city of Orlando. I didn't know what to feel, say, do or where to go out without being terrified. This horrible tragedy shook the entire world but mostly the City of Orlando and LGBT+ community who were in their safe and happy place when they were targeted and hurt. No matter who you are or where you're from, never be afraid to be WHO YOU TRULY ARE!! It's very hard to put my feelings into words. I'm oscillating between wanting to sob myself sick, feeling guilty for having such a powerful sorrow when I haven't lost anyone directly, and feeling numb. How appalling is it, that in this supposedly enlightened day and age, that my LGBT+ brothers and sisters can't even be in an LGBT+ space and have safety? 59 people dead, almost as many wounded, all those lives irrevocably changed or completely lost. And for what? Because some motherfucking psychopath decided he should be god. Because homophobia, transphobia, and bigotry are alive and well in the Land of the Free. Well, I have news for you, assholes! We will not skulk and hide in the shadows! We will not cower in our homes! We will not let you choose how we live our lives! We are The City Beautiful, and we will not allow you to sully our community! We will stand tall and proud, we will carry each other through this tragedy, and emerge like steel from a crucible! Love will always triumph over hatred.
