Mini-Game Ideas:
QR/Barcode Scanner: The idea for this came from how in certain areas around sydney, rubbish and waste lying on the streets is a major issue. Areas on the virtual map will be tinted a blue colour where areas of the city have high rubbish scanning/throwing out. By using location services, the more people in a certain area scanning products, the bluer the section on the map, the higher usage of the scanner app. This should hopefully motivate people to pick up rubbish on the streets where there is no blue.
RubbishCrush: Similar to CandyCrush, instead of lollies there will be different types of rubbish rated on decomposition time, the longer the decomposition the more points you accumulate if you collect 3 or more in a row.
GreenRoom A virtual reality room where the objective is to change 10 aspects of the room in order to make it completely environmentally friendly. This could include: - Turning off power points - Turning off lights - Switching from air conditioning to opening the windows Each time a room is won, a new room is unlocked with bigger issues, this could change to a whole apartment, then house, then apartment block etc.
TrainTraveller The idea is based off the official Subway Surfer app, this is a mini-game unlocked only when travelling on a train or bus and involves location services so the players avatar must jump and duck through obstacles depending on which station the player is at at the time.
RunnerRunner: A Super Mario inspired mini-game where the players character avatar runs on a factory conveyor belt and has to jump on the top of electronic technology and collect (run through) easy-decompositional or environmentally friendly items. An understanding of which items are to be collected and destroyed will come from a trial-and-error learning system which means learning as they play which items are good for the environment and which ones are bad. Example: Destroy: - iPhones - plastic bags Collect: - KeepCups - Reusable water bottles - Tupperware container
Prototype:
Image 1: This display is the Interactive Mini-Game screen, the bottom left corner depicts the current score and highscore as well as a reset button for the game in case it does not go as planned.
Image 2: The pop-up notification is a positive ‘pro-movement’ type of notification whereby it allows the player to post what positive choice they made in the game rather than their score. For example, if the mini-game helped the virtual world reduce rubbish, the notification posted to their social media could say something like ‘(Name) reduced their rubbish intake by taking their own lunch to work in a reusable container!’
Image 3: In order to accumulate points, a barcode scanner enables the player to scan a barcode on their items that they place in the rubbish bin. This part of the application requires a trust that the player is not just scanning in order to gain points but really putting them in the bin.
Prototype:
Image 1: The login screen, with a username and password and the ability to log in via Facebook and Twitter. The application icon is depicted minimalist in the centre of the Screen.
Image 2: This is the sky-view game screen, the avatar in the centre is an example image and depicts exactly where the player is standing. The person icon in the bottom left hand corner is a street-view option.
Image 3: The third image depicts the drop down menu including Twitter and Facebook links, a ‘community’ link, a message bank, a barcode scanner, back to home and sale (shop) links.
Game Synopsis & Objective:
Game Synopsis and Objective:
Title: Green Light
In Depth Description: The aim of our game is to accumulate points that in turn can be used to design their in-game avatars home. The player must reach point goals and when each goal is reached, certain aspects of the avatars environment change around him, (clearer sky, greener grass etc) (more ideas?)
Genre —
As the internet and connective devices grow, the ability to be joined with people and locations has never been as possible as it is today, especially with the use of global positioning systems (GPS). GPS locating, within games, is becoming more evident in the gaming world, opening up a whole range of elements to explore and develop (Hjorth 2011). With the ubiquity of mobile phones and the use of mobile games becoming more of an epidemic, they are classified “as an area of urban games” (Hjorth 2011 p 360).
With the option of playing in third or first person screening, this is a mobile-operated, global positioning system, with socially interactive and environmentally friendly ideals. Due to the fact, almost all of the world have some form of a handheld device, we have decided to make the game solely downloadable via mobile devices (i.e. Android phones, Apple tablets etc). As you journey through the game the use of your location will magnify the way you experience the virtual world. Displaying real-life navigation properties, and incorporating them with the animated storyline, it will generate a multi-modal media escapade.
Purpose —
As gaming is now apart of our way of life, scholars have coined the term pathological gaming, in which we are found to be dependant on the latest craze in the gaming sphere (Spekman et al 2013). Hence the purpose of our app is to seek prevalence in the gaming world, to get people to be conscious of the effects global warming is having on us and our ecosystem. It will display a multitude of ways in which you can make the earth a better place, with small simple activities that most people don't consider as a factor affecting. It will use playful game-like tactics to incorporate everyday tasks, like recycling and carpooling, in a reward like a manner, so people feel the need to be doing something that should already be done.
Lengthy in-depth description —
The main idea of the game is to raise awareness about global warming and its effects on our environment. We are hoping that with this game it will get people to notice the effects more, and what they can to do prevent and lower the results of climate change, not just for us but our future generations too.
When you first download the app you are to create your profile, design your character, and name your avatar. You then have the option of logging in with your email or, as recommended, signing in with Facebook. When doing this it allows you to have easier access to connect with friends and earn higher points and rewards. The storyline is then displayed on the screen, depicting a slowly disintegrating earth due to global warming and climate change. Pictures of rubbish, pollution, toxic waste, dying wildlife, all flash upon the screen, with dramatic serious toned music playing in the background. Then, there is your avatar, flying across the screen clearing up the air, “you can save the world, you WILL save the world!” Flashes on the screen as your avatar lands, and the option to start the game begins.
Through the duration of the game you will earn points through a reward system and gain higher abilities to unlock mini-games, and levels through completing environmentally friendly tasks. Such as recycling, carpooling, and creating healthy habits while destroying harmful industrial units. As you get higher up in the ranking system of the game you start to see a clearer sky, green grass, and more wildlife roaming around the world, as it is demonstrating the positive effects you are having within the environment.
With the social aspect of connecting with friends and completing mini-games with them, it also gives you the ability, to share your knowledge and insights on what you can do to ‘level up’ or in other words, help the environment. As though people will simply see this as a game, every task they complete to get rewards will actually be helping the environment in a proper manner.

Discussion: Our final app choice
Discussion: Final Game Idea Choice
After brainstorming amongst the group, we have decided that the best choice of our game is option 2:
Goal: a mini-game based application where the individual has an avatar and each action an affect on their in-game world.
Feedback systems: a score that amounts when different actions are followed through in the game. Points can accumulate to gain access to higher levels, higher levels open more mini games and character changes. Every level up makes the sky clearer and grass greener, to represent the improvement you’re making on global warming. Some actions to gain more point could be:
a scanning element on the app, where you scan your barcode and get more points, plastics earn more points, and the bigger the item the more points.
When a player scans a piece of rubbish a mini game screen will use the view of their camera to view if that player is throwing that rubbish in the bin.
Social: Connect with friends and when more than one of you are in the same car it will come up with an alert for a “carpool toll” where you all gain points in a team effort.
Mini-game ideas:
when you go past a location of high global warming impact (e.g. kellogs factory) you get the option of a mini game where you knock down and recycle to good of the factory and plant trees and turn the space into an environmental landscape.
