Ruins of Otrar
If you've been following my recent videos, you've heard quite a bit on the city of Otrar, where a Mongol sponsored trade caravan was butched by the city's Khwarezmian governor in 1218. Chinggis Khan's armies (under Chagatai and Ogedai) took the city in early 1220, slaughtering much of the population. While the city never regained its previous prominence, it was not totally abandoned, and was inhabited until relatively recently (I think the late 18th or early 19th century?). This video shows the ruins today: Otrar was notable for being built on a very large (I believe, artificial) mound. Its the large ridge view able at the start of the video.
