Large strikingly colored pigeon, it has a black head and underparts, chestnut wings and back, long fanned tail, and a white, green, gray, or black nape depending on the subspecies. Greatly resembles a pheasant, hence its name. Native to the primary rainforests of New Guinea and its surrounding islands. Can also be found in hill and montane areas. Forages on the forest floor for seeds and fallen fruit while wagging its tail. Makes a wide range of calls, but the most common is an introductory note followed by a loud descending whistle—“hoo-woooooa!”
