Three days of CIMT education with Dr Pavlina Psychouli of EUC. She was only planning to do the single Saturday introductory talk but decided to give us budding OTs an extra two-day workshop so we’d be able to get a better feel of it. _ Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) is a therapy program for select hemiplegic individuals (conditions such as stroke, cerebral palsy, etc) that involves intensive massed practice of using the affected limb. While it is currently mostly used for upper limb (i.e. arm, hand, shoulder), there is research on developing a similar protocol for people with aphasia (difficulty speaking due to brain damage). _ CIMT is developed on several theories involving neuroplasticity, motor behaviour and learned non-use post-damage to the brain. And it has shown significant results among clients (whose disability is due to learned non-use). _ However, CIMT is so intensive that both therapists and clients are reluctant to undertake it despite its promised outcome, which is understandable. Hence why so many modified-CIMT (mCIMT) protocols have been developed to better suit both sides. _ There are tons of research on CIMT and they all show better results compared to conventional treatment which is why Dr Psychouli is excited to share it with us. Malaysia does not have a certified CI therapist yet but hopefully the professionals and practicing OTs who attended Saturday’s session would start the engine while waiting for us to graduate. We were at #BIUS last Saturday, a one-day program that aimed to raise awareness about and teach Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM). _ It was actually run by actual hearing impaired people and we had the chance to learn and practice with them, which made it very very very effective. I can safely say we’d be able to communicate with future clients at the hospital if needed, at least by spelling if not by words. _ I do suggest everyone join the course at least once if you have the chance because you learn A LOT and it’s just an eye-opening experience. It’s only RM35 so, why not? We had a session for class photos today.
