-> Oslo, 31. august - Joachim Trier (2011)
Anders is a man defeated by his own choices. Desperate for a reason to live, for meaningful connection, Anders floats through his city visiting friends from a destructive past life. He speaks succinctly, with casual candor. He tries and tries to feel and feels nothing.
To call Joachim Trier’s Oslo, August 31st a film about a recovering heroin addict does it a disservice. Anders’ struggle is less chemical than existential. Even as he jokes and laughs he is plagued. Trier does not judge or indulge. His camera operates like that of a journalist, simply following Anders on his daytrip, mirroring the character's detachment from his own life. The music, mostly diegetic, does not serve to manipulate.
The final leg of Anders’ journey, a kinetic nocturnal jaunt spanning many locations, pulses with style and beauty before reaching its haunting finale. It's a visceral, powerful conclusion to an unforgettable film.
