On their last evening, they returned to Palma.

The city was golden at dusk, the cathedral rising near the water like something carved from light. They walked without destination through narrow streets, past balconies and shop windows, past restaurants beginning to fill with voices. LULU wore a a yellow dress that matched his, Gustave had stared at for so long when she came out of the bedroom that she had asked whether he required medical assistance.

He had said yes.

She had kissed him and told him to recover.

Now he walked with his hand at the small of her back, not guiding exactly, just present. She let him. Sometimes she even leaned into the touch.

The sunlight blurred around them. Somewhere above, laundry moved from a balcony. Somewhere nearby, glasses clinked, someone laughed, a scooter passed too close and too loudly. Life went on with complete indifference to the fact that he was holding the woman he loved in a city of gold beside the sea and feeling, for once, that nothing needed saving.
