On National Zinfandel Day, i though SOMEONE should post an “original” Zinfandel. 😉 As most of you know by now, Zinfandel is not in fact an American grape. This varietal originated in Croatia and there it is called Tribidrag or Crljenak Kastelanski. I’ve often heard people say that Zinfandel is a “classic American grape.” Ha! Turns out it is a classic Croatian grape - the unpronounceable “Crljenak Kastelanski” (also called Tribidrag). We enjoyed this 2015 Crljenak Kastelanski at a friend’s house from Matela Winery. Not jammy like your “classic American” Zin. Yesterday I enjoyed a luscious Tribidrag from Stina Winery on Croatia’s Island of Brac with salad, roasted potatoes and fish (cod and halibut) cooked on wooden planks. ————————————————— If you haven’t heard of Tribidrag ...it’s the indigenous Croatian grape that has genetically been determined to be Zinfandel.
