Fallen
SasuSaku. Priest AU. Rated T+.Ā
Sakura taps a foot against the floor of the church, more out of habit than anything. Her mom always found the habit annoying. Yet another reason why Sakura sat away from her during Mass. If her mother was going to force her to come to church every godforsaken Sunday she felt she at least had the right to sit wherever she pleased.
Sakura takes a moment to stare up at the stained-glass window above her. The early-morning sun pierces through it, causing fractals of light to dance along the floor, vibrant and colorful.Ā
With a sigh she turns her attention to her missal and flips to todayās readings. From her backpack she pulls out a copy of Miltonās Paradise Lost. A quick glance around the sanctuary confirms that sheās the only one on this pew with no one directly behind or ahead of her, and so she slides the book between the missalās pages to begin reading.Ā
Sheās only able to get through a few pages before the church bells ring. She closes the book and rises to her feet just as a hymn begins.Ā
Sakura remembers her mother telling her that today is the new priestās first day. Her mother mentioned it before they left the apartment this morning. Poor Father Orochimaruāan old snake of a man and someone Sakura tried to stay away from as much as possibleāsuffered from a heart attack a few days ago and is to be hospitalized for the foreseeable future. Sakura hopes itās forever.Ā
āI heard the new priest is handsome,ā her mother said as a way to bribe Sakura into going to Mass after Sakura vehemently reminded her that she wasnāt sure she even believed in God anymore.Ā
āThatās disgusting, mom. Heās a priest,ā Sakura replied, offended that her mom would think a mere handsome face would work on her.
Eventually her momās nagging wore her down as it always did. It was easier to give in than deal with the silent treatment for the next week. Sheās only seventeen, after all, and still has another four months before sheās free to live and do as she wants.Ā
Sakura yawns once, wishing she were at home studying for her exams instead. She just hopes this priest is actually good-looking enough to warrant her wasting her time here.Ā
The hymn continues. She looks back to the door of the sanctuary.Ā
And there, standing at the door, is their new priest.Ā
The book between the pages of her missal drops from her hands and falls to the ground with a thud. She barely notices it. It remains there, forgotten, disappearing from her view like the people and the world around her.Ā
Thereās only him.Ā
The priest strides down the aisle with sure steps, graceful and authoritative. She takes him in with starving eyes, as if he is the last thing sheāll ever see, as if God is only giving her these short, excruciating seconds before He steals him away from her forever. Sheās never felt anything like this. Never felt the need to laugh and cry at the same time so much it hurt. Never felt such agonizing, marvelous awe, like sheās just witnessed an angel fall from the heavens above and the lingering light surrounding him is as blinding as it is beautiful. She canāt look away. Couldnāt even if she tried.Ā
Sakura told her mother this very morning that she wasnāt sure she believed in God. Now she laughs at the thought. How stupid of her, she thinks. How foolish.Ā
Because surely God must exist to create a being so terrifyingly perfect.Ā
So I just finished the Siren by Tiffany Reisz and Iām not even sure how I feel.
I cried when I never cry.

Adam sports a 1970s perm hairdo in Jan Gossaertās massive oil-on-panel, made around 1520. The original sinners, painted almost life size, are shown just after theyāve tasted the forbidden fruit (the apple in Eveās hand has a bite mark).

The original sinners
From the 'Bibliotheca Spenceriana,' a catalogue of rare books in the private collection of George John Earl Spencer, published in 1814 in London.
āYour eyes will be opened, and you will be like Godā
That smooth-talking serpent did not lie to Eve; it just withheld a few details. In this late 15th century painting, Flemish artist Hugo van der Goes imagined the serpent as a salamander with a human head. He followed the logic that the thing must have walked on legs before God cursed it to crawl on its belly and eat dust. You can view the original at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
When God Dreamed Eve through Adam
(poem by Richard Chess)
When Adam saw her, muscle of a new day, when he squatted to smell the musk between her legs, when he leaned down
To grasp the wrist of the most familiar creature heād encountered yet, to pull himself, the mirror image of himself, to her feet;
When he took a few steps back to appraise her with the mind of sun, the heart of moon, to praise her
With the applause of leaves bestirred, to seduce her with the iridescence of lizard skin, to navigate into the current of her
And be powered and transported like a fish through a diaphanous riverās shadow and light, to know her with every cell, every molecule, all
The atoms and elements that spun into his inceptionā with all creation pulsing in his temples, his wrist, with his unique
Talent, endowed in him by his creator, to see beyond the momentās garden all the way into the geneticistās lab,
When he stood back from her suddenly he understood the world would never culminate nor close with him
And he was frightened, the first, the original terror which he couldnāt tell from wonder as he stood there regarding what was made
Of the same stuff as he yet utterly strangeā how the world around him even then was tossing up difference after difference,
Until maybe even theyād be tossed aside should this new allowance for difference not grow the way god dreamed it would
When god dreamed Eve through Adam into being.
