Sometimes you just ask stupid questions!
When I worked in a laboratory there were over a hundred of us and in the staff room at break or lunch some of the young women would knit and I once asked why they changed sides at the end of a row? I got a series of answers about knots being handed or having a front and back face and that was how they had learned and so on. The next day one young woman said ‘Look at this, took me an hour last night to get my head round it.’ She took some needles out of her bag with a few rows of stitches on it and proceeded to knit backwards and forwards without changing sides. She also said she would not be changing her usual technique since that was unconscious and this took thinking about.
Interesting mix of that’s the way it’s always been done and just because you can do something doesn’t mean you have to.
Which long preamble gets me to the photographs: -
The first is a somewhat unprepossessing piece of herring bone that took me an hour last night because I asked the question ‘Can you do it on the diagonal?’ The answer is yes but it takes a bit of thinking about and keeping mountain and valley fold assignment would very much help.
