sorry to ask about this again about this but i’ve been thinking about it too long and i think the reason is because it just made me feel dysphoric. i just want confirmation that alc is not actually arguing that trans people aren’t the gender they identify, and that she does agree that trans women are women/trans men are men? because i just want to stop feeling invalidated by this. sorry again for being a bother
i mean you'd have to read the book the passage is from or ask her for her personal opinion, but she is a trans woman who consistently uses other trans people's requested pronouns, names, terminology, etc. she's also an academic/writer who talks a lot about the theory of how gender and sex 'work' and as i said she tends to do it in very flippant and provocative terms. but if you are asking if she believes that trans women are women and trans men are men - as far as i'm aware the answer is yes, just that she's also very interested in the mechanisms by which people gender themselves and others. though actually a few months ago there was an article that seemed like she was moving away from those purely theoretical ideas/arguments
i read the twitter thread you linked as well as some other quotes by andrea long chu and i still dont get how this isnt a weird argument? so a trans woman isn’t actually a woman unless the people around her see her as one because her gender identity is “basically worthless” and we have no control over who we are? i understand if you don’t have time to fully break this down and i’m sorry i’m being a bother, but it just seems so reductive to say trans people need others’ approval to be the gender they identify
i mean it's essentially an extension of judith butler's performativity theory i.e. that gender is made up of actions/signifier that have no internal meaning beyond that which we assign to them, except andrea long chu is arguing that the meaning that others assign to those gendered actions/signifiers has more ontological weight than the meaning that we personally assign to ourselves. also a lot of what andrea long chu says is very flippant and phrased deliberately provocatively, especially in females. i think ash has my copy right now or i'd find the relevant section for you - i haven't read it in ages so you will definitely get better context from the actual text
