John is invited out boating with his RAMC buddies. And heās not that into it, but heāll do it because they ask him to, and Billās going to be there, and Bill saved Johnās life, so it just seemed right. Anyway, theyāre having a cookout on the desk and drinking some beers and they suggest that John go out on the inflatable raft. And heās had a few, so he just thinks, āOkie dokie!ā and he goes out on it. Heās attached to the boat by a tow rope, and itās really nice and peaceful. All white noise and salt air. And sort of dazzling, too. He starts to feel a little dazed, being rocked on the ocean. A little drowsy, even.
Anyway, John falls asleep on the raft (remember, heās a little drunk) and while heās asleep, the tow rope snaps. He wakes up a bit later, but the boat is already out of hearing range, and he doesnāt have a flare or even a whistle. He waves his arms and shouts himself hoarse as the boat drifts out of sight, but all his friends are passed out drunk on the deck.
Heās out on his own in the middle of the ocean for five hours before Orcalock finds him. Orcalock holds John in his arms (it feels so good; his skin is so cool and smooth, and John is so sunburned) and takes him back to the boat. Orcalock waits to see that John is treated for his sunburn and dehydration, and then he tells off all Johnās friends. They canāt really understand his language, but they get the point anyway.
Of course they canāt stop thinking about each other. Just two weeks later, John gets a boat again to go out looking for Orcalock. Orcalock is looking for him, too.
the tale of orcalock
NEED 2 TYPE THIS ORCALOCK HC B4 I FORGET: (edit: this ran away from me and became a ficlet. whoopsĀ ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ)
John was the town doctor in a small fishing community before he was drafted for the war. When he returned, he was too plagued by memories of performing surgery on the battlefield to continue his job, so he took up fishing. He only caught enough for himself to eat, as he has no family. He also had no close friends, which made it easy for him to stay out on the water all day appreciating the calm still waters and the creatures that lived there. This was how he found his peace, and how he forgot what he didnāt want to remember.
One day he felt a dip in his small boat behind him, and when he turned around he found a young man in the water. He was surprised and concerned: the waters were incredibly cold and he was incredibly far away from the shore. John offered him a seat in his boat and his extra scarf, as surely he must be freezing. The young man with his dark hair and bright eyes shook his head, but asked John his name.Ā āJohn Watson.ā he said.Ā āNice to finally know your name, John. My name is Sherlockā and with that he dove back down, splashing his large black and white tail as he went. Johnās eyes went wide as he hurried to lean over the edge of his boat and get a glimpse of what he had just seen. A man with the lower body of a fish! But not a fish, it looked more like an orca whale; just like the ones John had delighted in watching as a child. He was completely in awe, and couldnāt quite believe it.
Sherlock came to visit him again and again, always asking him questions about who he was and what he did, what his life was like and what his life was like in the past. His visits became so frequent, John packed extra food for him (his peanut butter and jelly sandwiches put the biggest smile on Sherlockās face) and catching fish became an afterthought to the dip in the boat he expected to feel and theĀ āHello Johnā he expected to hear every day.
Even after months he still couldnāt believe this incredible creature was so interested in him, the lonely fisherman. But Sherlock was lonely too. The half breed who had no kin, and the doctor who couldnāt even heal himself. They were the highlight of each otherās day and often wished they could see each otherās lives beyond their small world in the boat, but John couldnāt swim, and Sherlock couldnāt walk.
One day, Sherlock suddenly asked if johnās offer to give him his scarf still stood. As john placed the scarf around the young orcaās neck, Sherlock leaned forward and kissed him earnestly on the lips. They smiled brightly and stared into each otherās eyes, resting their foreheads together while floating on the cold still waters. The lonely fisherman and the lonely orca had finally found hope in each other.
