These gourmet doughnuts combine the flavors of sweet oranges and olive oil for a unique and delicious treat. They are perfect for breakfast or dessert.
Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour. 1/2 cup granulated sugar. 1/4 cup olive oil. 2 large eggs. 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice. Zest of 1 orange. 2 tsp baking powder. 1/2 tsp salt. 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg. Oil for frying such as vegetable or canola oil. Powdered sugar, for dusting.
Instructions: Mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg powder, and salt in a mixing bowl. Whisk the eggs, freshly squeezed orange juice, orange zest, and olive oil in a separate bowl. To form a dough, pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir just until combined. In a deep pan or fryer, heat the frying oil to 350F 180C. Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/2 inch 1.25 cm on a lightly floured surface while the oil is heating. To cut out doughnut shapes, use a doughnut cutter or a round cutter with a smaller one for the center. The doughnuts should be cooked through and golden brown after about two to three minutes of frying each side, so proceed with caution when placing them in the hot oil. Using a slotted spoon, remove the doughnuts and drain them on paper towels to get rid of any extra oil. While the doughnuts are still warm, sprinkle them with powdered sugar.
