At 00:16, the first of six Airspeed Horsa Gliders carrying the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, commanded by Major John Howard, touched down in Normandy. The first troops in what was at the time the largest invasion force in history.

Bearing only what arms and ammunition carried by the gliders, their orders were to capture intact the Ranville & Bénouville Bridges across the Orne River and Caen Canal respectively, and hold until relieved.
