“How can you be that much in love and not be together?”
For someone who has harped on for weeks about how love isn’t real, this New York Times piece has left me absolutely heartbroken. It is a love story about two people who are different in every possible way. One is an American, one is an Italian. One is a Mormon, the other is a Communist. One is a smoker, the other detests the habit. One cannot accept that he is gay, the other cannot imagine living a closeted life.
Can love have a happy ending for two people who are so different? It depends on how you’d define “happy.” There is plenty to be said about love across borders, age, and religion, but I think Tom Clark, the subject of this video essay, explores those ideas much better than I ever could.
Love is too often bittersweet. I hope yours never is.
