I'll be right back! " Whether he had said yes or no, Zuri would've handed him over, running to the mother while waving her hands frantically.

The absurdity of the request is what caused the mind to pause, reflect. His predatory gaze flicked between the disheveled annoyance pressing the request and the dark coat moving further into the crowd. " Don't waste my —," he replied, his voice devoid of any concern. He had no intention of helping nor interest in her trivial problem for this wasn’t his business, and she was nothing to him.

Yet she didn’t wait for his response. In a moment of sheer desperation — or perhaps fleeting stupidity — she thrusted the child into his arms and bolted after the other woman. Really, to give away something so vulnerable to a stranger within Night City?

For a second's worth, Adam just stood there, the child awkwardly cradled in his arms. The irritation brimmed beneath his composed coolly exterior at the fucking audacity of the woman — to think she could impose a woman's problems on him, as if he were just another faceless figure in the crowd, some ordinary man she could rely on.

He looked down at the child, its tiny form fidgeting slightly whilst grabbing on to the sleeves of his suit, completely oblivious to the danger it was in. It wasn’t the child that angered him, oh no, it was the sheer gall of the woman who had forced this situation upon him. She had been reckless, thoughtless, and it made his fingers itch with the desire to wrangle her neck like a worthless cut of meat.

For now, he held the child with a detached indifference, his mind already moving past this trivial interruption. When the woman returned, she’d find nothing but the cold shadow of a man she’d never want to cross again. The bitterness of her insult lingered in his thoughts.
