The Horizon Spirals / The Horizon Viral, OOIOO / Lightning Bolt (2026)
Lightning Bolt, a band inspired by Japan’s most rabid 1980s noise rock bands, sharing a bill with OOIOO, a Japanese outfit that developed out of a very similar scene – a cool proposition, but not one that produces anything particularly special. Both bands do what is expected, producing the styles that each has respectively become known for over the past decade or so; OOIOO’s looping post-gamelan, Lightning Bolt’s marginally-less-raw-than-it-used-to-be crash rock. I’m glad The Horizon Spirals / The Horizon Viral is ordered the way it is; I prefer to be woken up by the end of an album than sent off to my daydreams.
