Genuinely breaks my heart to know that Tang Bo didn’t think he’d survive the war. But he had full confidence that CM would. He was only right about one thing.

Speaking of favorite arcs. Love love love the story of the Phantom Sword Thief and Immortal Physician.
Every cultivator being led to a horrible death trying to obtain the life-saving power of the primordial pellet is so *chefs kiss*. The survivors leaving the crypt of the sword thief wt no primordial pellet and only rusted swords that were once imbued wt mythical energy. All of them crawling out of the ground to be met wt cultivators who were ready to kill them for what they saw dozen others die and kill for. For something that doesn’t even exist.
Except it does. The life-saving, changing, primordial pellet exists. It’s just not in the sword crypt. The sword crypt leads only to death bc the way of a cultivators leads to death and murder. The Immortal Physician believed in saving and healing the injured. He saw the cycle of violence perpetuated by cultivators and hated it. He hated it with such a passion he made a map and crypt so intricately designed just to lead those same power hungry cultivators to die in gruesome ways.
CM finding the pellets after realizing that despite the Sword Thief and Immortal Physician being the same person, they had different goals. The Thief was made to punish and kill. The Physician was meant to heal. They knew the resting place of the Thief, a crypt buried deep underground. But the Physician obviously hated cultivators, so why hide the primordial pellet, the life-saving pellet, in a crypt of death? He prized himself on his ability to save and heal. He wouldn’t have left the pellet to be forgotten. So what’s the opposite of death, underground, darkness and unmoving rock? A river. A river that starts at the top of a mountain in a gently flowing stream surrounded by lush vegetation and a forest. To be saved is not to pursue violence but to live in peace wt the living world. That’s how the Physician saw it.

One thing about me? I will take an action comedy and wring all the emotion out of it bc being a comedy doesn’t mean it lacks depth.
The Yunnan arc is so good to me. Mt Hua going to this sect and area that was largely abandoned and left for dead during the war is so *chefs kiss*. Yunnan cutting off trade to the Central Plains bc of the acts that occurred a century ago. Esp since (as far as I’m aware in the novel) no action was taken from the Great Sects to help Yunnan that was literally RAZED to the ground.
The consequences of cutting off trade in a place wt as rough terrain as Yunnan. The way the villages are starving and poor, but wary towards any outsider, even if they’re giving out food. Is so important to me. Meng So commenting that he wants to help his ppl and needs to establish some trade routes but knowing that doing so will enrage everyone. To open up Yunnan again to trade wt the Great Sects after they were abandoned and had their land burned is an affront to their pride and their ancestors.
It’s easy to say that they should just grit their teeth and ignore their pride and forget the past to survive. But how can they forget the way they were left to die? A century is not long enough to forget what happened. A venture is not enough to heal what they had brutally taken from them. The Great Sects suffered, war makes everyone suffer, but they survived, they didn’t lose their ppl to the extent Yunnan had. They were able to repair and become powerful after the world. Yunnan did not have that same privilege.
It’s even worse when you know that Yunnan was their first line of defense and had been raising concerns to the Great Sects that the demonic cultists had begun growing and moving. It took Yunnan burning for the Great Sects to finally acknowledge the threat, and when they revived the messages calling for help. Yunnan was ignored and left to be razed to the ground.
Meng So using Mount Hua (who were similarly burned both literally and figuratively) to open up trade is so *chefs kiss*. Especially with the reveal that as much as they despise the Great Sects, they admire Plum Blossom Saint Sword (Cheong Myung). Bc in their time of need, everyone else ignored their pleas of help, except for CM. Nothing killed me more than finding out that the Mt Hua disciples didn’t know a lot about PBSS despite him being their strongest disciple ever, despite PBSS being the one to kill Cheonma and end the war. That Yunnan knew more abt PBSS than his own descendants bc PBSS actions stayed wt Yunnan for so long that it survived a century when he was largely forgotten by everyone else. (CM does NOT remember aiding Yunnan, he only remembers fighting the demonic cultists in the area.)
Yunjong’s interaction with the ppl in Yunnan (specifically the kids) hits me in the gut. Yunjong seeing the starving kids and immediately using all his rations and money to feed them. Selling his own sword when he runs out of money. Knowing his past makes the scene hit harder. Geol, BC, and Iseol never starved like he did. Those three are swordsmen, they’ve been training since they were kids bc they wanted to. He did so to repay and survive.
Yunjong is usually so level-headed and calm. One of the last ppl to fall into CM’s schemes. But after seeing how everyone was starving and suffering he lost his composure. CM having to talk to him and say that there’s only so much they can do as a few people. (Which CM and Meng So solve by the trade routes but that happens later).
Yunjong finally being in a place where he’s secure and powerful and wanting desperately to help others who were in a similar situation as he once was. YUNJONG!! You are so special to me.
This arc also has my favorite CM moment of CM fighting and trying to kill a huge spiritual snake only to give up and let it be after finding out the snake is so hostile bc it has three babies. CM… family is so important to him guys </3 (which makes me want to talk abt CM and his view on Baek Cheon’s family).
Meng So is also such a dear character to me. You think he’s just a bull-headed, muscle brained idiot but he’s quite smart and savvy. Him approaching CM about trade only AFTER CM spared the snake is *chefs kiss*. Yes he liked the disciples bc they’re descendants of PBSS, but also bc he saw them as an opportunity to help his ppl. Meng So only allowing trade after the snake incident bc to the Nanman sect, they live in harmony wt the animals. They let the spirit animals roam free, they do not tame or kill them. He knows he cannot enforce that rule on outsiders, but that doesn’t mean he will forgive them for it either. So CM not killing the great spiritual snake just to obtain some weeds was a good thing in Meng So’s eyes.
Fave joke in ROTBB is when it’s revealed that Geol comes from a loving, rich family and everyone else just dead stares him. CM was reborn as an orphaned beggar child. Iseol is an orphan. Yunjong was also an orphaned street kid who only survived bc Mt Hua took him in. Baek Cheon is a runaway wt w powerful family who only sees worth in you if you’re strong. Then there’s Geol who has parents worried abt him and who greeted him wt a whole dinner spread.
Iseol went to Mount Hua bc that’s the last remaining connection she has with her father. Baek Cheon initially went to Mt Hua to prove himself and to improve Mt Hua (mostly for his own benefit). Yunjong stayed in Mount Hua bc the elders literally saved him from starving to death. CM went to Mt Hua bc that is the only home he’s ever known. Literally. In his previous life he was abandoned as a baby in the gates of Mt Hua. Mt Hua is his only home.
Not to say Geol doesn’t have just a good reason to go to Mount Hua. Wanting to practice martial arts while also avoiding the local huge sect from destroying your family’s business is a good reason. But it’s just funny.
