Yuu: I love you so

Ok, so I, uh, finally calmed a bit and reread the chapter. Apart from the fact that it is a VERY sad chapter and I visioned this conversation between Mika and Yuu happening for awhile, there were a few things that grabbed my attention.

First, Mika said that when they both die they would be together in Heaven. Yuu asked where’s Heaven, and Mika doesn’t know. But he knows one day they will be reunited. It’s like he’s just waiting for it to happen, and wants to wait patiently. No rush.

Second, Yuu said he couldn’t let Guren make all the hard choices alone. I believe he meant that.

Third, Yuu made his decision but it wasn’t shown to us. We don’t know what this decision was, only that it was BAD. Mika screamed he couldn’t do that.

Forth, for whatever Yuu wants to achieve, he needs power. A lot.

Fifth, Guren said he needed Yuu for their plans. I knew there was something there, I’m still waiting for the answers.

So, all of this combined. We still don’t know a lot of things and they are yet to be known to us. But my current theory is that whatever Yuu is trying to achieve right now wasn’t discussed before. And if Mika mentioned Heaven, and that everyone should be reunited when dead, and Mika was deadass shocked with Yuu’s decision, and Yuu needs a lot to power to do it, COULD IT BE that instead of reviving Mika or everyone he just decided that killing everyone is the answer?

Now, I know it sounds a little far fetched, that’s why it’s just a theory. I didn’t take a look at what people are saying, but if more people are saying the same thing maaaybe we are on to something. I still have no idea why Yuu’s needed, though, and what he truly is. I also think he might run to Shikama for help and release him. Yes, this is another possibility of Yuu’s decision.

So, uh, I think Yuu might just have officially become one of the villains.

And boy we might cry so much at the end of this.

Bonus takes: I’m broken-hearted with Mika and Yuu crying. The fact that Yuu should really let go of Mika (best decision story wise? Don’t know. But wisest decision realistically speaking? Yes. You wouldn’t encourage someone you love to be broken forever because of someone they lost). The blame Mika carries. The love they have for each other. Yuu’s emotional dependence is also cruel. It’s just… I’m depressed.

Yeaaaaah. On one hand, what the hell Yu, but on the other, is it really a surprise? This is the same character that was talking about how he didn't want to live anymore since Mika was dead. The same character who wanted to die back when his family (and more importantly, Mika as he believed at the time) was killed. I won't lie though. I thought Mika successfully convinced him there for a second. Goes to show you that it really is Mika > everyone else.

As you say, it's wild how strongly Yu feels about Mika despite their frankly limited time together compared to everyone else. Yu has been Sika Madu's experiment this entire time though, and it seems like he was meant to be specifically tied to Mika. Makes you wonder if that strong bond was... manufactured? Purposeful? In which case, wouldn't be interesting if Yu was "programmed" to be a protector of sorts that was meant to help ensure that Mika was revived, just like Sika Madu wants. Just a fun thought. Anyways.

Yes, Yu is being incredibly selfish, but on one hand, Yu's not exactly wrong. While he didn't explicitly say it, he's sorta implying he doesn't owe the world anything, and that's true. He really doesn't. Now is saving the world the right thing to do? Yes. No question about that. That's what any typical protagonist would do right? Not Yu though. Yu has always been somewhat selfish. Everyone in this series is at some point. It's what makes them interesting. No one is quite the classic morally good character. They're grey as you say.

Oh, Ashuramaru. I too was wondering where he went, but it's nice to see he's still around. I'm curious as to if the stormy background in those panels is a result of Yu's current state, or if it's because Ashuramaru had been sort of locked away or something like that. I'm also super interested to see Ashuramaru's take on everything here. He's on Sika Madu's side, but he seems to care about Yu. Plus Krul is here. Gotta wonder if that'll sway his opinions at all.

As a last note. I found it kind of funny that, despite being suspicious and standoffish towards Guren this entire time, Mika sort of defended him this chapter. He was the one to continuously point out all he went through to get to this point. Guren finally revealing his proper plan likely helped that, but I like to think that it's also Mika being able to look at things subjectively, which is nice.

I'm interested to see where this all goes. I don't have a solid reason for it, but some part of me believes that Yu intends to try and find a way to revive both Akane and the kids and Mika. Now that would be typical protagonist behavior.

I don't have anything to say except that I'm feeling miserable. Seeing Mika's tears hurt pretty bad. Why is their story is so tragic, why. Can't they be happy together? Mika already accepted his fate, he just wants to die in peace. And Yuu can't let him go. Man this is tragic. Tragic. I'm sobbing.

The last two chapters of ons changed my view for most ( better say all ) characters. The only character I like is Yuu, and Mikaela who was my favorite has 'disappointed’ me.

I read this post that I relate and am here to add my own thoughts: Yuu isn't the only one being selfish by wanting Mikaela to live, but Mikaela too. Mikaela, who had been distrustful towards Guren from the beginning now trusts Guren with the plan? Or is this just a chance for him to die that he takes no matter the cost? Yes, Mikaela wants to make up for ‘killing’ the kids and yes, he wants to die, but that's a SELFISH wish. He doesn't want to live for Yuu, he doesn't wonder what will happen to Yuu when he's not around. That's selfish here, and I'm glad Yuu chooses his living family, instead of the rest of the world, which is basically what everyone in ons stands for.

Maybe it's because I've focused in the past on characters that were in reality suicidal because of the ‘crimes’ they had committed but chose to live in order to keep their found family safe. Castiel for example, the powerful angel that himself has said that ‘ he would have killed himself if he faced the result of his choices ’, dies and wants to come back for one reason: because his human family needs him.

Which brings me to the thing you brought up about potential ‘programming’. I definitely think that’s likely the case at some level. When there were so many versions of Yu created it makes sense to think that the First was maybe experimenting with him in some way to figure out how to get his desired results. If so, I think it would be cool to see how acknowledging that some part of their bond was manufactured could change Yu & Mika’s perspective on one another.

Also, as far as Yu wanting to save everyone, that would be a very expected goal for him to go after. But I think if he actually did it, that might become what we talked about awhile ago: an unrealistically easy solution. As a character, he has a habit of making up his mind and dragging along other characters with how he thinks things ought to be, even if he doesn’t have a solid understanding of how to achieve that. So, especially with Yu’s past naive behavior about having his cake and eating it too I personally think it would be more interesting narratively for him to take a path of either sacrifice or selfishness.

Although, I’m never truly against a happy ending, regardless of whether I feel it’s well earned or good for the plot. If everyone gets reunited and there’s world peace? Great 👍 lol

True, it is really bold. Yu isn't much of a planner. As you sorta say later, he kinda just does things. He's pretty decent at thinking on his feet, but rarely does it seem like he'll come up with a plan on his own, so I think that, at least for now, he plans on winging it. Probably thinks that he and Mika can do anything if they try. Yu's not stupid when he puts his head to good use though, so I guess we'll see. As for Ashuramaru, I wouldn't be surprised if he interacted with Krul soon. We kinda got faked out on that one back in 109 (iirc?), so it'd make sense if that was looming on the horizon.

Oh yeah, it would definitely be that too easy ending we talked about. I'm not entirely against it either, but I'd want it to feel deserved. Yu would need to develop and grow as both a character and person for that to feel deserved to me. If he just continues to pull people along and get his way essentially just because he's the protag, then that'd make for a lackluster ending. Pure speculation, but I could see an ending where, because Yu has some weird unknown power about him, it turns out that Yu can sacrifice himself to help bring back humanity and Mika. I'm personally not too sure how I feel about that atm since it just occurred to me. Don't wanna deep dive on it for length purposes (I could speculate about possible endings all day), but Yu already has no regard for his own life, so you know he'd do it in a heartbeat. What could be more interesting is if that option is available to him, but he's convinced not to. I digress though. We can speculate until the manga ends, but at the end of the day, that's all it is. Speculation.
