A naked Naga Shadu, considered by many in India to be a holy person, after taking a holy bath in the freezing waters of the river Ganges during Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, India. Kumbh Mela, the Hindu festival that has been held for thousands of years at the banks of the river, attracts tens of millions of people. More than twenty million pilgrims were estimated to have taken a bath in the river on that cold day. Photo © Konstantino Hatzisarros

These kids were acting as my “guides” on their boat on the Ganges river in Varanasi (Benares), one of India’s Holiest places which, in my opinion, feels like the oldest city in the world. Scores of pilgrims arrive there daily to bath in the (polluted) waters of the Holy Ganga. Many old people also come to Benares to wait to die and be cremated there, as they believe that if you die there you stop the endless circle of reincarnation.
I saw something floating on the river nearby and I asked the kids what it was.The young girl looked and nonchalantly replied “dead” as if it was something very normal. It was the torso of a poor man who could not pay for enough wood to have his body completely cremated, and what was left of it ended up in the river. Photo © Konstantino Hatzisarros
