Margaret Garnett died January 13, 2003. She was 69 years old. Mrs. Garnett used a wheelchair and had spent almost 20 years institutionalized for unspecified 'mental health problems' before being released in 1998.
Leaving the state facility proved to be no release for Margaret. Her daughter assumed the role of her caregiver and proceeded to isolate her from the community, her friends, and even the rest of the family. After Mrs. Garnett's death, they told police that they had feared that she was being financially exploited, but no complaints were apparently made at the time.
Margaret's daughter beat her to death, then set their shared apartment on fire to conceal her crime. When firefighters arrived, she told them that her mother had accidentally started the blaze with a stray cigarette. Forensic analysis proved her version of the events to have been impossible, however, and the autopsy revealed Margaret's injuries and the fact that she was already dead when the fire began. Her killer was convicted of arson and second-degree murder and sentenced to 15 years to life.
