The yard is lush, overflowing with the smell of lilac. It pushes in through the open windows, as do the sounds of our neighbors' Cinco de Mayo getdown. Today, the day on which, if we knew our history, we would be celebrating more than just some excuse to drink tequila -- much more. We'd be celebrating the Mexican love of liberty and thanking those ragtag ancestors for fighting the Battle of Puebla. And for against all odds, winning that battle and preventing Napoleon III's forces from joining Southern confederates -- forces, which, if left unchecked would surely have drug out the U.S. Civil War for many more blood-filled months or years. The scent of lilac is pushing in. In return, I am gently pushing out the sounds of The Velvet Underground. For spring, for Cinco de Mayo, and for drowning out bad pop music. . . #betweenthoughtandexpression #cincodemayo #spring #onesieweather #onesie #naturallight #dclife (at Columbia Heights)
