Set during #OneEnchantedEvening. I feel like Giovanni would have some doubts about dating after so long of being single, and the way his and Sindella's marriage ended would play into his anxieties with the date, a little bit of darkness in light.
---------------
Giovanni sighed, looking at himself in the mirror. His reflection smiled widely at him and gave him finger guns. He smiled back at him, hoping for the best, grabbing his top hat from it's hook on the door. He shook his head and, laughing softly to give him happy thoughts due to old habits, pulling his scarf off the hook beside it. He smiled, this scarf was a birthday gift from Zatanna a few years ago, wrapping the scarf around his neck.
"Giovanni, you devil." He joked, glancing back to his reflection that was nodding with a large smile is approval.
"This is a bad idea.." came the voice, not for the first time since Sindella left, as he closed and locked the door.
Giovanni shook his head, trying to think happy thoughts. "Who's to say? Always try something once." He answered, trying to sound optimistic before he used his magic to get from the front door of the penthouse to the sidewalk below.
The voice wouldn't stop. "She won't like you. Not like that."
Giovanni started to hum a happy song, thinking. "So? We could possibly be friends if the date doesn't work out, get to know each other as people."
"Still soft. No wonder she got to you."
Giovanni almost tripped over the sidewalk at the crosswalk, clearing his throat as he tried to seem like he was distracted. Thinking, "we weren't compatible. Zatanna is the only good thing that came from it."
"Always a fly, never a spider." He paused, about to knock on Ms. Moone's door.
He thought loudly, "please go away. I'm done playing this game. I want to be happy for a night, and I'm going to be regardless."
There was nothing when he knocked on her door, taking a step back onto the sidewalk.
After a minute, he had to wonder if she had heard him. But, thankfully, the door started to open. And there, standing in the doorway, was Ms. Moone.
"Ms. Moone."
She returned the smile, a soft one in kindness. "Mr. Zatara." She giggled walking down the stairs. "I haven't been on a date in years."
Zatara chuckled. "I have the same thoughts going on right now." He cleared his throat. "Shall we?"
The Popcorn.
Well, it was a simple date. Popcorn and a movie, right? Well, things were going alright, they each had their own popcorn. And then suddenly-
He looked down, before pulling his hand away from hers, exclaiming, "I am so sorry!" Had his magic done that?
As he was shushed, the voice began again.
"See? You made her feel uncomfortable. She isn't having a good time."
Giovanni looked to the side, frowning. Well, this isn't good.
The pier.
Giovanni hated this, trying to find a way to tell her they should just break it off there..
Wait- what was- Too late. He lost control of his feet and crashed into June, only to get shoved off her and over the rail into the water.
As he swam to a ladder, the voice sounded.
"See? Lost control, lost your chance. Just like last time."
Fighting sadness, Giovanni sighed. "I know, just stop."
Giovanni looked over at June. "I uh, can walk you home.." he couldn't anymore, wanting this voice to stop and to stop wasting June's time.
"I told you.. She told you.." The voice ignored his attempts to silence it, bringing him crashing down.
"Well Ms. Moone, that was something.." Giovanni looked at her, dejected. It was worse when she said.
"It sure was." Well, there it was.
After that handshake, he was kicking himself in addition to the voice paddling on that it told him so.
When Zatanna told him about the date. Well, he should have expected and things became a blur of pain until he got the scarf back.
June, after sending Enchantress packing, left. It was a mutual decision, an unspoken one.. Oh well. At least the voice was quiet. It was over.
Why did he have that- oh no.. he had one of Zatanna's nachos.. here we go again..
