{Going to be putting this under Read more because of reasons. Mainly I have NO idea how long this rant will be. Just that it may or may not get a little heated. XD}
{So yeah. Fanservice. People either love it or hate it. I personally hate it as I have found it rather problematic over the past few years. The main issue I have noticed is it lends itself to people shipping minors with adults. Which is gross. I should not have to extrapolate on that. But it has happened and it really disappoints me that we as a society still accept things like this. None of it is okay whatsoever.
Another gripe about fanservice is character design. If a female character is large breasted AT LEAST have it proportional to their body.
Take Seri here from K Project. This is fanservice at it’s worst. The outfit, and the large breasts do nothing for her. Her body proportions are WAY out of wack. And for fucks sake at least let the poor woman wear shorts or leggings under that short ass dress.
Admittedly with Chris from Symphogear here I am a bit biased, but at least the breasts here are more proportionate to her body and actually somewhat make sense. Of course Japanese school girl uniforms are inherently sexist in my opinion but that’s a rant for another day. Once again Symphogear is a favorite series of mine so I do have a bias, but I am more than willing to admit that the character design in it can be considered problematic in its own ways. At the very least here Chris looks like a fairly normal human while Seri is just... Eugh.
Of course male characters are no different, in a sense that it can lead to people having ridiculously high standards for how a teenage boy should look. Let’s be real. Unless they are an athlete or some sort of super solider or what have you no 16 year old boy has a 6 or fucking 8 pack. It’s unrealistic and people need to realize that body shaming does not just happen to woman, it can and will happen to men too. Fanservice also leads to double standards that are impossible to reach. Like if you really want to draw women with big boobs, don’t be a fucking coward and make it proportionate. We need more thick girls and not just muscular ones. As someone who’s struggled all her life with weight issues their needs to be more chubby characters for positivity. That it’s okay not to be a size 0 or whatever and that no one will call you fat because you can’t really fit into normal size skinny jeans.
At the end of the day, all I really want is for fanservice to stop sexualizing minors because it’s fucking gross. And for the ani/manga industry to start embracing body positivity more. That whatever your body shape is no one should judge you for it. As long as you’re happy in your own body then nothing else should matter. Of course, more LGBT+ representation would be great, but that’s a whole other issue in itself. With large industries such as ani/manga sometimes you really do have to take baby steps.}
