Maya almost preferred the harsh luminescence of her laboratory than the dark, grimy city outside. While it was in the basement of the main Church building, it was one of the safest places in the city to be, and Maya had little love for the city outside. The Church professed to help and encourage the citizens to live well for God, but when Maya walked the streets and saw the dying and the sick without any help, she found it hard to keep her faith at all.
Burying herself in her research had been a blessing, and she brought up the DNA sequence again - she had memorised it, but it was a habit she had gotten into. It had been retrieved by a Priest, and it was the DNA of the infamous 'Black Hat' who had presumably been killed in the train explosion outside of the city. The Priest in question had been ridiculed by the Church at first, but there were still vampires, no matter how hard they tried to convince the world that they were all dead.
Maya ran her hand through her hair and slumped back in her chair. She had worked later than usual, and she didn't much like walking the city in the dark. She was eyeing up the small bed she had made in the lab for occasions such as this when a clatter from behind her made her freeze.
